Roof Hatches

Roof Hatch for Campervan

From increased daylight to ventilation and the camping delight of sleeping under the stars, a roof hatch enhances your camping experience. Campervans usually feature multiple roof hatches to create a light and open atmosphere while allowing fresh air into the interior. By opening a few windows, you can create a cooling airflow within the campervan. Roof hatches designed for campervans are built to withstand the vehicle's high speeds. Some roof hatches with less aerodynamic shapes may include spoilers to optimize airflow around them.

Roof Hatch for Caravan

Roof hatches specifically designed for caravans are not compatible with campervans. In terms of functionality, they are otherwise identical to roof hatches for campervans. Besides larger roof hatches above the bed or living area of the caravan, smaller roof hatches are also commonly used for ventilation in the shower cabin.

Roof Hatch for Bus Campervan

Whether you purchase a ready-made bus campervan or convert one yourself, a roof hatch is a space-saving way to bring light and fresh air into the interior. Larger-sized bus campervans typically have one or two roof hatches to provide a sense of spaciousness and ventilation. Installing a roof hatch is a manageable task for those with basic DIY skills. Considerations When Purchasing a Roof Hatch

Before buying a roof hatch for your campervan or bus campervan, it's essential to consider a few things to avoid any surprises:

  • Know the thickness of your vehicle's roof. A roof hatch is designed for a specific roof thickness, so ensure it fits or make necessary arrangements, such as using a frame, to make it compatible.
  • There are different types of roof hatches. Some open by tilting, while others open by lifting to allow fresh air intake.
  • Ensure the roof hatch is suitable for your caravan or campervan. Although most roof hatches are designed for both, there may still be specific models intended only for caravans. For instance, a roof hatch with permanent ventilation may cause whistling noises when driving at higher speeds, making it less suitable for campervans.
  • Determine the appropriate size of the roof hatch you need. Measure carefully to ensure it fits your (bus)campervan. Also, consider the placement of other accessories, such as solar panels or a satellite dish, in the future.

Roof Hatch with Fan

If natural airflow isn't sufficient to ventilate your campervan effectively, a roof hatch with a fan may be the ideal solution. There are various roof hatches available with built-in fans, ranging from small fans for shower cabins to larger fans capable of quickly equalizing the indoor and outdoor temperatures. One popular option is the Maxxfan Deluxe, which can both intake and exhaust air.

Ventilation Options via the Roof

In addition to a roof hatch, there are other options for roof-based ventilation in your campervan. An air conditioning unit can provide both cooling and fresh air intake through the roof. However, compared to a roof hatch, an air conditioner may not offer an additional source of natural light and may consume more power. On the other hand, an air conditioner allows for adjustable cooling, which can be advantageous.

Insect Screens and Blackout Shades for Roof Hatches

One significant advantage of a roof hatch is the additional light it brings to your campervan, caravan, or bus campervan. Most roof hatches come with integrated combination roller blinds. These blinds not only provide darkness for a good night's sleep but also include built-in insect screens, preventing flies and mosquitoes from entering through the roof window.

Installing a Roof Hatch

The specific requirements for installing a roof hatch may vary depending on the type of recreational vehicle and the roof structure. In addition to the roof hatch, you may need a few other items. For example, butyl sealant like Sika Lastomer 710 for proper sealing and wooden battens for secure mounting. Keep in mind that each roof hatch may have its unique installation process, so always refer to the manufacturer's official instructions for a proper and reliable installation. If there is no manual available, check the product information or contact us for assistance.

  • Start by determining the placement of the roof hatch. Carefully select the location inside the campervan or caravan and measure how the roof hatch will fit. Consider the exterior aspect as well, especially if you plan to install other roof accessories such as air conditioners or solar panels later on. Take measurements of the interior and mounting dimensions of the roof hatch, and also consider the overall outer dimensions.
  • Once you are certain about the placement, mark the interior dimensions to guide you when cutting the opening. Double-check all measurements before making any cuts.
  • Cut the opening in the roof, ensuring the top part of the roof hatch fits properly into the created opening. If the roof is made of metal, file the edges to remove any sharp burrs. Treat the edges with an anti-rust product and thoroughly clean up any debris to prevent rusting.
  • For uneven roofs, you may need to elevate the roof at points where the frame does not make direct contact.
  • In the case of bus campervans, it is often necessary to create a wooden frame on the interior side to adjust the roof thickness for the roof hatch.
  • Thoroughly degrease all surfaces where the frame and sealant will be applied.
  • Position the inner frame inside the opening. Ensure that the roof hatch is properly oriented and apply a generous amount of Sika Lastomer 710 to the outer frame, then place it over the opening. Screw the inner and outer frames together, taking care not to overtighten the screws to avoid distorting the frame.
  • Finally, install the combination roller blind into the inner frame and secure it in place.
