Sinks
Sinks and Basins
A basin is an essential part of your camper or caravan interior. Having access to water for a pot, personal hygiene, or washing dishes is more of a necessity than a luxury. At Speelberg, we offer sinks and basins in various shapes and sizes.
Sink with Cover
To optimize space in your kitchen, consider purchasing a sink with a cover. When you're finished using the sink, you can close it off with a heat-resistant cover made of tinted glass. This provides additional countertop space for cutting or placing dishes. Additionally, a cover adds a visually appealing touch compared to the stainless steel commonly used for sinks.
Camper Sink
Whether you have converted a van into a camper or own a factory-built motorhome, the placement of the kitchen varies depending on the camper type and vehicle model. From small to large sinks, triangular to round or square sinks, the freedom of choice ensures you can find a suitable sink for your camper's kitchen, no matter how compact it may be. When purchasing a camper sink, consider the design of your kitchen. What is the size of the cutout hole you can make in the countertop? Keep in mind that the sink may be slightly larger than the cutout size, and the hinge of the cover may also require some space. Additionally, you'll need to leave room for the faucet if it's not mounted within the sink itself.
Caravan Sink
Similar to campers, caravans come in various sizes and shapes, built on trailers or caravan chassis. Caravan sinks can be found in all types of caravan kitchens, from compact outdoor kitchens to luxurious kitchens in mobile villas.
Installing a Sink
Installing a sink is not difficult as long as you carefully consider the sink's dimensions. With basic tools such as a jigsaw, drill, tape measure, or square, it can be easily done in most cases. Always consult the manufacturer's specific installation instructions before proceeding.
- Check the overall dimensions of the sink and also examine the cutout size.
- Determine the placement and mark it. The ideal position for a sink is approximately 5 centimeters from the edge of the countertop where it will be installed.
- Use painter's tape to protect the countertop's surface from the jigsaw. This will help achieve a clean cut in the countertop.
- Carefully review the marked measurements before making any cuts.
- Once everything is accurately measured, use a drill to create holes in the corners of the sink. From there, use the jigsaw to make the necessary cuts.
- Cut out the hole in the countertop and remove the cut-out piece.
- Assemble the sink trap and secure it in the sink.
- Install the faucet in the faucet mounting hole.
- Remove the painter's tape around the hole and double-check the fit. Lower the sink into the cut-out hole.
- Adhere or screw the sink firmly into the countertop.
What to Consider When Buying a Sink for Your Camper or Caravan
There are several factors to consider before purchasing a sink, ensuring that you make an informed decision and avoid any surprises after the purchase.
- Will the sink and faucet fit in the countertop, leaving enough space for the faucet and drainage connections?
- Except for a few exceptions, sinks are typically sold without a faucet. This allows you to choose a faucet that suits your preferences. Look for the faucet's mounting hole size. Some sinks may not have pre-drilled faucet holes, allowing you to mount the faucet directly through a hole in the countertop.
- If the sink has a cover, ensure that the faucet fits neatly underneath it.
- If you have limited space in your kitchen, consider a sink with a cover to maximize your workspace. A hob and sink combination takes up even less space than a separate sink and stove.
- Think about how you will attach the sink. Some sinks come with mounting screws, while others can be glued to the countertop.
- Most Dometic sinks come with a drain. For nearly all other sinks, a separate drain needs to be purchased. Check the diameter of the drain hole for compatibility.
